I'm Kate Hartman. I come from a background in photography/film/video/installation. Now I make wearables and other odd things and I'm interested in connections between communication systems and the physical world. I'm also interested in making things that can be used beyond this techosphere that I've recently stepped into. Hence the interest in ubiquitous computing.
Past phone-related projects:
The Dream Hotline - preITP. Super lowtech. Collected 1000 dreams anonymously via telephone that ended up being part of a performance/installation.
Collective Collage - Producing Participatory Media (Summer 2006) - A system for photo posting in public spaces. Eventually intended to be something more freeform. It was up and running on the ITP Waverly Plasma display for most of August & September.
Urban Sonar - Computers for the Rest of You (Fall 2006) - Cell phone used as datalogging tool that gathers & uploads sensor information about personal space & heartrate.
Botanicalls - Plants make phone calls according to their needs. People call plants to learn more about them. My part of the project was developing the phone system with Asterisk & figuring out how to get it to hooked up with the Xport.
Wake Up Interviews - Project Development Studio (Fall 2006) - A system where each night you call & record a message for yourself to be woken up with the next morning. An attempt to explore timeshifting & conversations with self. Also done with Asterisk. Still a work in progress.

I have crappy but surprisingly reliable Samsung phone from Verizon. I also have one of the Nokia N80s, but it just has the SIM card from Manhattan Story Mashup in it, which I'm not sure is still in service.
